Teenage Drunk Driving is the leading cause of death among high school students.
“Storm Life gives the issue of drinking and driving a new perspective. Rather than ramming facts and statistics down teenagers throats, the film is a thought provoking look at the impact that drinking and driving can have on the lives of our friends and loved ones. With minimal narration and a haunting musical score, Storm Life will be a great discussion starter in classrooms.” Mary Cubello McIntyre Media Inc.
Storm Life has a mission. This teenage drunk driving video is scripted to attack social norms on teen drinking and driving. At parties, seasoned as well as ‘first time’ drinkers may consume more than was intended. They will have lost their ability to make the right decision not to drive. Society has to step in and help them make the right decision. If it is accepted by society that they have a right to step in, then individuals or groups will take a stance and not let that driver get in the car. Many times, a friend will say, ‘let me drive you home’. After the driver insists that they will be fine, this friend lets them go. This passive approach needs to become an action oriented approach. Society has a moral obligation to protect innocent victims as well as their friend that is about to be put in harms way. If this becomes an accepted view, people will come to the aid of an individual who is trying to prevent a person from driving. Group action is very persuasive. Even if a person is intoxicated, a group of people will make that person reevaluate how far he wants to push his persistence. This person may become violent in his persistence with an individual but if others are involved, a decision to not drive becomes evident.
Social Norms can be changed. Many years ago in a small town, fighting at parties was the norm. It was everyone’s entertainment for the night. People would gather around to root for their favorite or just the person losing to see the fight last longer. Acceptance of this behavior was the norm. Today, this behavior is not the norm in this town. When violence becomes evident, people now condemn this behavior as it will ruin the party. The aggressors are asked to leave the party. This social norm makes fighting unacceptable. People attend parties knowing that they will be shunned if they drink too much and start a fight. This is proof that social norms evolve. Storm Life is geared to lead the transition of societies' view on drunk driving and especially underage drinking and driving.
